Ms Marvel is just the pivot that super hero movies need

The last decade was the decade of superheroes until it was stopped by COVID. But I think there was the exhaustion of superhero movies in the general public. It doesn’t help when you have esteemed directors also speaking up against these kinds of movies.

But Ms. Marvel is a different kind of superhero movie. Why is it different? Well, firstly, it’s diverse. A show that’s based on a Pakistani superhero (I really wish they had gone Indian) is bound to attract a new audience, one that appreciates the cultural diversity represented in the movie.

Ms. Marvel brings a unique flavor to the superhero movie genre. The enthusiasm and the excitement of this young girl, who has grown up reading comic books and watching Marvel movies, it’s pretty evident in how ‘modern’ the movie is.

But when she discovers, she might have powers, thanks to some genetics. Overall, the movie feels very different from the standard superhero flick, mostly because it highlights the thoughts of a post-Avengers world where a young teenager (although IDK her real age), discovers, she might have powers too.

The focus on emotions

I don’t know Iman Vellani. The 19-year-old has pretty much never featured in my radar, although she’s doing an excellent job acting in the Marvel movie. Her raw emotions and the surprise and excitement of being featured in a Maravel movie, of moving to Karachi, Pakistan, of trying out Biryani from a bag is purely what the franchise needs.

There are many things wrong with the Avengers movie, they seemed like overhyped action movies. I mean, Bollywood has been producing such action movies since decades (just check out the South btw). However, I am glad to see a much more focused and nuanced movie that relies more on the acting than just a machismo display of powers and great editing.
