HBO Content no longer on Hotstar

HBO content will no longer be available on Disney Hotsar after March 31. This is, in my opinion, the biggest loss to Hotstar compared to any other changes. Yes, they lost IPL, but the key part of Hotsar was the HBO and the Star World shows. That’s why I liked it.

Of course HBO might bring their own service in India, which in my opinion is a big disappointment. So many companies continuously try to make their own streaming services and then bear the overheard costs and then see that it's probably not worth it. Sony CEO announced a few days ago that it saves money by just putting its content on other streaming services and “selling it to the highest bidder”

I really like that strategy because then it just puts all content in one place. However, with so many streaming services popping up left and right, it’s becoming difficult to take a meaningful decision on how to manage your subscriptions.

Is HBO leaving Hotstar enough to unsubscribe?

Maybe, Maybe not. At this point, I have family members using Hotstar and I also am very keen on watching some of the old Star World shows. So that might just mean I’ll continue with my subscription. But the need to subscribe is lower and lower. And I do hope that HBO brings out its own streaming service or just gets it on Netflix etc for India. I don’t want to miss out on Succession which is essentially releasing in the last week of March.
